![]() HANZEL und GRETYL "2012: ZWANZIG ZWOLF" 2008 / Metropolis Records
I’ve
been listening to HuG for years now - At least since their second
album,“Transmissions from Uranus” in 1997 (Tho I have them all).
They have transitioned in sound from a beat-driven industrial metal to
a mostly hard hitting, pulse pounding and in your face metalpalooza!
What has stayed constant are their two main themes which are 1.
UFOs/Aliens & 2. German language (tho I believe they aren’t
actually German) with Nazi WWII references. It wasn’t until their third
album, “Uber Alles” did they take on the visual role (via costume) as
Space Nazi’s seemingly (like Pinky and the Brain) hell-bent on taking
over the world.
The notion of course is completely absurd and in my opinion quite humorous! Their lyrics alone have always been rather silly, but layered with truly intense and seemingly passionate music, you could almost mistake their humor for sincerity. Of course I could be wrong. Maybe they do believe they are racist space aliens, or awaiting a time for when these genocidal extra-terrestrials will invade our peaceful planet. I honestly don’t know. But what I do know is that a song featured on their current album called “HEIL HIZZLE MEIN NIZZLE” has got to be one of the funniest song titles I’ve seen since…. “Cum Dumpster” by Jack Off Jill! Bottom line, if you’ve enjoyed their dare I say lesser produced purely metal prior album “SCHEISSMESSAIAH” then you will easily transition to “2012: Zwanzig Zwolf.” If you’re looking for the sound of their IMO most well balanced industrial/metal album, “Uber Alles” then you might want to pass. But if you are willing to both totally rock out and laugh out loud, then pick this up! [rd] - 2.27.2008 |
